Mathematician John Lennox refutes Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins' assertions the universe requires no God!

In the very revealing video linked at the bottom of this page, the brilliant mathematician John Lennox refutes the assertions by atheists like the late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins' contention that our universe's existence required no Creator. Lennox earned his doctorate in mathematics from Cambridge University, and then earned a second and third doctorate from Oxford University and Cardiff University, respectively.

Before Stephen Hawking died, his last public statement echoes what we ALL should wonder about. As he encouraged us to "remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet" and to "wonder about what makes the universe exist." How interesting, as he clearly believed that SOMETHING caused the universe to exist - although he would spend his professional life denying it required a Creative intelligence behind it. In fact, in his famous book, The Grand Design, the very title acknowledges that the universe DOES reveal elements of design. But what or WHO designed it?

Hawking, much like evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, has argued for a logical absurdity - that is, their assertions that gravity, amongst other laws, could have allowed for the universe to have created itself. And, as we've all heard, Big Bang cosmology theorizes that there was NO time, space or matter before the Big Bang event. Of course, like Einstein came to believe, the Big Bang required a cause, as it was a beginning - one which requires a BEGINNER. And that is why Einstein became a theist who believed there was a Creator - if an impersonal one. But Hawking didn't believe the Big Bang was the very beginning - asserting other things continuously existed before the Big Bang. He said asking what was before the Big Bang was like asking "what is south of the South Pole." Of course, none of his nonsense belief offers scientific evidence, but rather - and ONLY - philosophical conjecture.

A widely heralded atheist, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins has, much like in Hawking's final public statement, pondered and recognized that the universe requires a cause, noting that, "Something pretty mysterious had to give rise to the origin of the universe!" And like Hawking, Dawkins, when speaking of a universes coming from "nothing," actually believes it came from SOMETHING! Dawkins differentiates the scientific understanding of "nothing" from the theological idea of "not anything." He has said that modern physics discusses the notion of "nothing" in terms of physical quantities - things like energy - or even the absence of space-time itself. And that such things are not the same as absolute non-existence of ANYTHING. Again, like Hawking, Dawkins has admitted that science cannot currently explain what happened before the Big Bang - or WHY it happened at all. And that is because science cannot test non-physical things - or ANYTHING it has no way of testing. And so, mere conjecture and theories about such things are impossible to PROVE!

It's worth emphasizing that, even if SOMETHING was eternal - like energy - it has no mind to create, plan, strategize, design, orchestrate, or so brilliantly assemble the astonishing building blocks of the cosmos with mind-boggling sophistication, order, great power, and precision - which INSTANTLY began at the beginning of the Big Bang. As for the noted laws of the universe - LAWS do not cause or create ANYTHING! Laws are but observations explaining HOW things work - but not WHY the work.

SEE THE VIDEO HERE - as Dr. John Lennox deconstructs the absurdities claimed by key atheists - as not only are their assertions scientifically unproven, but even philosophically and logically, their assertions are unsupportable.

Interesting video—thank you for posting! I am not a physicist, but these types of arguments often inspire me to look further into the subject at hand. I love the learning experience.

If I understood correctly, John Lennox was making a distinction between “philosophical nothing” and”scientific nothing”. Philosophical nothing refers to the colloquial, near-incomprehensible image of complete absence of existence of anything. Scientific nothing refers to a physical state governed by physical laws but with the absence of classical matter (e.g., black holes). The brilliant physicists who described the Big Bang believed that scientific nothingness preceded the Big Bang (not philosophical nothingness),

Can you help me understand how this distinction supports the argument for intelligent design?

What Lennox is saying is that NOTHING can come from NOTHING - as EVERYTHING has a source that previously existed - which is only logical. And he's also saying that the scientific evidences related to the Big Bang reveal that, prior to it, absolutely NOTHING - no matter, time or space existed. And yet, a universe suddenly began with stunning precision and astoundingly designed building blocks - which means that source for such things A) HAD to exist and B) that Source could not have been physical or dependent upon the universe or things in it (that previous to it did not exist). Scientific knowledge cannot explain nor examine anything that doesn't have a physical existence and chain of examinable evidences - which did not exist prior to the Big Bang. Meaning, the physical building blocks of the universe had to somehow INSTANTLY appear and emerge from a NON-physical state.

Next, non-theistic unbelievers, when asserting the universe came from nothing, never tend to actually mean it came from no THING! As the all assert some THING or things existed before the Big Bang, whether a chain of eternal universes, or energy, etc. But that are no proofs or scientific evidences for such things - while there ARE prolific speculations and non-evidential (and illogical) SPECULATIONS for such. The scientific method cannot analyze or examine the non-physical realm pre-existing the Big Bang. But lets humor the non-theists and their assertions that SOMETHING pre-existed the Big Bang that logically HAD to be eternal - as the universe and things in it, which did not yet exist, could not create itself!

Now, let's just compare the early universe (moments after the Big Bang began, with its stunningly complex building blocks or marvelous designs, working with perfect sync and precision, and on an enormous scale - let's compare it to a cake. What are the odds that blind, random, non-thinking components, so stupendous in designs and cross functionalities, could even exist without a mind of great power, ability and intentions behind it? And like the plausibility that, without a brilliant chef, a wonderfully tasting and beautiful cake one comes across, somehow emerged as all of it's ingredients just happened to come into existence, and without a chef, combined together into perfect batter. Then, a sophisticated ELECTRIC stove likewise just happened to have appeared and the ingredients incredibly flowed into cooking layer pans. And somehow the layers and their pans made it into the stove. And somehow the stove managed to set the perfect temperature and ALSO to remove layer pans after just the right amount of time. Then, the layers somehow were frosted with an exquisite frosting, and stacked into a mind-blowing cake - which just happened to be both beautiful and incredible to taste. Does one believe such an absurd cake could produce itself? And such a cake would be immensely more simple in components, recipe implemented, and development than the components behind the Big Bang! Mind you, the very complex components with at least the potential to create a massively complex universe AND their breath-taking functionalities ALL came into existence in very early universe's very first MOMENTS, just moments post the Big Bang's beginning. WHAT created them? WHAT designed them? Their incredible functionalities - and shocking complexities???!!! And for a zillion possible elements that MIGHT have been eternal, with just the right ones to produce a universe capable of eventually supporting life? Okay, that is beyond all reason to think possible.

What possible planning and designs can non-thinking things produce: The dreams that rocks dream, that's what! Blind, non-thinking things can't see, plan, design, plot, orchestrate - all things only a great mind could produce - things that even are best scientists, physicists and astronomers STILL scarcely understand the basics of. And just like that incredible cake referenced above - whether of a cake or for a complex universe, the correct ingredients / building blocks merely appearing are incapable of making either one. And a UNIVERSE???!!! Please! Or the creation of ANYTHING of complexity. As, blind components - just like rocks - given vast billions of years will not eventually begin inventing and mastering calculus! See the absurdity? These are what Lennox is referring to - or at least has in many other videos.

Hope this helps others as well!

You can’t say EVERYTHING has a source because that would include your God which goes against your claim, so an exception has to be made to this rule. If you can make an exception for what you call God, someone else can make an exception for something you do not call God.

Ken, your infected thinking continues to blind you to plain logic, as you continue to try to convince yourself and others of an impossibility. Whether one believes in God or not, common sense SHOULD tell us that there HAS to be at least SOMETHING that is eternal! Otherwise, you have a mind-blowingly complex universe coming into existence without an intelligent cause - just magically popping into existence without a source. But that takes a TON of (illogical) faith to believe! And we all know what non-intelligent things design and create - the things and dreams of ROCKS - absolutely NOTHING! And we also know that NO THING can create itself.

Again, Ken, WHY do you care so much to spend years of coming here obsessed with denying God's existence? Because even if an uncaused but Godless universe were possible - well, NONE of ANYONE's beliefs about our origins would even matter, as we all would merely be facing a hopeless death in a dark world. And, right now, Ken, your determination to fanatically continue to deny God has left you in a depressing and hopeless state - and that is, unfortunately, a condition of your own heart and mind's making. Strange, you never focus on arguing against the idea that an entire universe of insanely complex things could have pre-existed and self-assembled without a cause. Because what you have a problem with is GOD'S eternal existence - and it obsesses and keeps you, mentally, in a very bad way, whether you're willing to acknowledge it or not (although, to some degree, you have previously lamented over the despair your atheism has created around you and your own family). So, there is wonderful hope in the Lord - but you have to sincerely want and seek Him to receive it!

Those were your words; not mine. Go back and read what you actually wrote.
