When we read our Bible's today, many of which are printed upon very thin paper - and with all manner of paper products all around us - we don't tend to think about the Bible writers or the materials used for their early scrolls. Many of the early Bible manuscripts - including those still existing, were written on on scrolls made from papyrus. Some were also written on animal skins, scraped, burnished and stitched together. Later - and not until the 2nd or 3rd centuries - Biblical scribes began to write on papyrus parchments, that were folded and stitched into a codex - similar to printed books today. But the early paper of the Biblical writers - rather, papyrus - was a precious and delicate commodity. In fact, it's rather amazing the number of them that have survived into modern times.
