Popularity of Non-Christians Wearing Crosses

Post by Philip »

I've often wondered why so many non-Christians and even people with no religious pretentions whatsoever
Iike to wear cross pendants, jewelry or earrings. I remember when they used to be huge with the heavy metal crowd (probably for the iconic symbolism). I've always thought this affinity to be rather weird, espescially as it's so widespread. Anyone have any thoughts or insights as to why this is? Is it simply because people think it looks cool? I'd think those agnostic and atheist, espescially, would have nothing to do with THE symbol of Christianity, would be repulsed by it. Is it that they are deliberately trivializing it by making into a fashion accessory? What???!!!

The cross is not originally a christian symbol. I doubt someone wears them because they have affinity to the christian belief.
It would be a blessing if they missed the cairns and got lost on the way back. Or if
the Thing on the ice got them tonight.

I could only turn and stare in horror at the chief surgeon.
Death by starvation is a terrible thing, Goodsir, continued Stanley.
And with that we went below to the flame-flickering Darkness of the lower deck
and to a cold almost the equal of the Dante-esque Ninth Circle Arctic Night
without.

All we needed to know about the history of the cross. And of course it's completely accurate because it's Wikipedia. ;)

IMO, non believers probably just think it's a "cool" symbol.

Some wear it because it is a "goth thing" and others where it as a statement against Christianity, while others wear it just because.
People, we know, are fickle.

How should a Christian feel about the cross?
well:
Galations 6:14
But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

That is it in a nutshell for a Christina.

A lot of people in Hong Kong wear American flag designs, or crosses for the same sort of reason.

Its just a thing, dont try to make it into something its not.

I remember being at my mother in law's house (she's Cambodian) and she had a Khmer dance video playing. It was basically just a bunch of girls doing choreographed dances to Khmer pop songs. I remember one of them had a Slipknot shirt on, which I thought was hilarious!

T shirts one sees made in Asia are often quite hilarious, when the person designing them does not know English and will just put odd words on them.

But I think you point was with cultural influences, and sure, you see people picking up bits of eachother's cultures, and making it their own, in odd ways.

Look what westerners have done with the Jesus story-

Cathedrals, televangelists, Popemobile, book of Mormon..

Cathedrals: Yes, it's so very awful that catholics try to encompass the glory and majesty of god through incredible, awe inspiring, architecture.

Popemobile: most of the ones in recent memory have been donated, even if i'm wrong, they're about .00001% of the amount the catholic church donates to charity/ spends on the poor each year.

By the way: Saying that "catholics should have spent the money they did on cathedrals on the poor" is an absurd statement ; it really shouldn't require an explanation if you put any thought into it.

I assumed "have done" to have negative annotations.

I don't know why I took it out of context. I'm in a pissy mood today.

I used to wear one, it was a gift from a friends mum when my friend died. My friend was a Catholic and always wore it. I still have it.

Have thought about wearing it again now, especially as I have now found Christ myself but may get a new, different one.

Oh, and happy ypu're not allowed to be in a pissy mood, it goes against your name
