Revelation 2: who is being spoken of in this verse?

Post by Christian2 »

Revelation 2:

To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. 2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.

Who are the false apostles? Why are they false apostles?

Thanks.

Here is the whole context from the ESV...

Rev 2:1 "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: 'The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.
Rev 2:2 "'I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false.
Rev 2:3 I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary.
Rev 2:4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.
Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
Rev 2:6 Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
Rev 2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.' ESV

Who are they - the bible describes who to watch our for... and they are false...

2Co 11:13-15, 2Co 2:17, 2Tim 4:3-4, 2Pet 2:1-3, 1John 2:18

1John 4:1, 2John1:7-11, Jude1:4,11,12,13,14,15,16

Hope this helps...

One of the issues in Ephesus was that there were some "Christians" preaching that Jesus was not God.
It is said that the Apostle John lived in Ephesus and if that is the case, we can understand why John's writings were the most Christological of all the writings we have.
It may be the the false apostles were those claiming to be Christians BUT denying that Christ was God.
