Chicken or the egg?

Post by RickD »

Just been thinking late at night when I should be sleeping.

According to evolution, what came first, the chicken or the egg? And why? y~:>

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever.Amen.

Daniel,

When googling an answer to a question, isn't it usually good etiquette to read until the end?
If you did, you would've seen that particular article didn't say "neither". It said:
So, the egg must have come first.
But I wasn't really looking for someone to just do a google search and post a link. I can do that. I was looking for someone who actually knew something about the subject, so I could get an explanation.

Nevertheless, that's one vote for the egg.

Eggs have been around for a long while, chickens are relatively new on the scene.

The egg in theory because the "new chicken" species would have had to have been BORN new, it would not have "mutated" during it's life time to be a "chicken" and then lay an egg with a "chicken" inside it.
It would have to have been the "first laid" of a new species.
So the Egg came first, it just wasn't laid by the same species of chicken as what is in the egg.
Supposedly.

Lol yeah, I was thinking just that. Some years ago I watched a documentary on the subject, an hour-long that promised to finally answer the age-old question of which came first, the chicken or the egg. The much-hyped conclusion was that it was indeed the egg, produced by a wild chicken. y#-o
Needless to say my reaction was one of absolute disappointment.

Umm...ok... y:-/

Ken,

You do realize the chicken or egg question is referring to a chicken or a chicken egg, don't you?

Ok, I'm hoping you or someone can explain this further.
Since evolution is about science, and what can be shown by science, is it possible, scientifically, to show that a different species of bird could reproduce a species that is different than itself, as you're suggesting?

In other words, we have a male bird species x that mates with female bird species x, and it produces a chicken egg? Does this make sense to anyone?

And it would have to have been something other than a different species of chicken at one point. Because that wouldn't answer the question. A different species of chicken is still a chicken.

Just a thought here (and bear with me as I've had a glass of wine :)) but I reckon it could be a bit like ligers, where one parent (the father, if I remember correctly) is a lion and the other a tiger. If those then bred I'm presuming that their offspring would be ligers.
I've just read that through and it doesn't really help with the chicken and egg does it?

I'm pretty sure that ligers and other similar animals like mules are completely infertile/sterile and cannot produce offspring.

That did cross my mind as I was posting it but wasn't sure.

Back to that then...

Male bird -x mates with female bird -y which produces a chicken egg?

I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch(pun intended), but how does this not pose a problem for the ToE?
