Johnny and Dan were talking and Dan says that one day he would like to meet the Pope.
Johnny: No problem, me and the Pope are very good friends. I can take you to him.
Dan: Dude stop with that. You don't know the Pope.
Johnny: Ok then, let's go to Vatican and I will show you.
Dan: I'm going to Vatican with you and but I ain't going to the Pope with you. Just in case you don't know him and try to make a scandal, I don't want to get arrested.
Johnny: Fine by me.
[traveling to Vatican]
Dan: If you are so good of a friend with the Pope come out with him at his balcony and wave at the crowd. I'll stay here in the market and observe.
Johnny: Ok. Going now...
After 10 minutes Johnny and the Pope show up at the balcony waving at the crowd.
Dan is very surprised. At that point some Chinese tourists ask him: "Hey man, who is that guy sitting next to Johnny and waving at us?"

What we have at arm's length is tremendous, yet we always want more. Same thing with trust.

I've heard the first one, merely a joke about how well known the first guy is, especially compared to the pope. I've heard a different version that elaborates on how the first guy knows so many people that he even knows the pope! and thus the joke about the dude recognizing him
