I still dont see it as a reason to deny ones heritage, even if one has moved for a better life.

And you probably like that anti God song, Imagine, by John Lennon. :shakehead:
John 5:24

I do actually

Apparently a school in USA banned it for being anti religion.
I know he sings imagine theres no heaven, no religion too but I see it more as trying to illuminate the wrongs done under the umbrella of religion.

Just look at the lyrics of Lennon's song God.

He is anti God. Not just anti religion.

God
John Lennon, Plastic Ono Band
Lyrics
God is a Concept by which we measure our pain
I'll say it again
God is a Concept by which we measure our pain
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in Tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in Kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me, Yoko and me, and that's reality
The dream is over
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday
I was the dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was the walrus
But now I'm John
And so, dear friends,
You'll just have to carry on
The dream is over
John 5:24
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

Hmmm...this has gone from multiculturalism to pride in one's country to «not denying one's heritage»... They ain't all the same, Mrs Teller. Multiculturalism is crap, period. Ditto for misplaced pride in one's banana republic. As for «not denying one's heritage», it is harmless and probably even beneficial.

In New York's Central Park, there is a memorial to Lennon's Imagine. When I was there last, people were holding lit candles around it and looking sorrowful. I found the scene amusingly religious...

I think a pinch of salt is required here. Artistic license perhaps?

This whole discussion lacks a focus. A Ford Focus? No, but I saw a Ford Tri-Motor once. That's a plane. I'm going to Columbia by plane! No, I don't do drugs. But I know a pharmacist! His wife is an optometrist. I need new glasses because I can't focus on tiny writing. Why is the print so small?

To be or not to be- blonde version
To be, or not to be blonde, that is the question:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the mind to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageously Dumb bimbos,
Or to take Hair color against a Sea of platinum,
And by dying end them: to dye, to sleep
No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
The Heart-ache, and the thousand Natural locks
That Flesh is hair to? 'Tis a consternation
Devoutly to be wished. To dye, to sleep,
To sleep, perchance to Dream; aye, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of dumb blondes, what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this hair coloring,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes Calamity of so long locks:
For who would bear the Whips and Scorns of time,
The Hairdresser's wrong, the blonde woman's Contumely,
The bangs of despised Color, the Law’s delay,
The insolence of Bimbos everywhere, and the Spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy low IQ,
When she herself might her Quietus make
With a bare Bimbo? Who would Fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life of dumbness,
But that the dread of something after coloring,
The undiscovered Country, from whose blonde,
No Traveller returns, Puzzles the stymied blonde,
And makes us rather bear those locks we have,
Than dye to others that we know not of.
Thus Conscience does make flaxen of us all,
And thus the Native hue of Towheaded bimbos,
Is sicklied o'er, with the pale cast of bleach. And enterprises of great pitch and moment,
With this regard their Currents turn vacuous and dimwitted,
And lose the name of Marilyn Monroe. Soft you now,
The fair Vanessa? Nymph, in thy Orisons
Be all my sins remembered.
John 5:24
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

You seem to discount France's experience with immigration from the Magrheb. The history of that immigration, and the difficulties France has faced since the 1970s answer both of your questions, above. Yes, a large part of Arab Muslims feel unwelcome, and yes, they wish to remain separate from the culture of their host country.

I was watching a newscast on TV5 (the worldwide French broadcaster) and President Hollande was speaking after the recent terrorism in Paris. The President went on about how France was a country where all were welcome and many peoples had found refuge, bla bla bla...Then he said, «...France is the freest nation on the face of the earth...» and I burst out laughing! Since Americans also believe you are the freest nation in the world, what makes you think the USA will have more success at integrating these people?

Uh...I'm still waiting for an answer to my question from citizens of the other «Freest nation on the face of the earth»

y:-?

1) The United States is a melting pot. That's kind of our thing. Another of our things is groups that've been here for a while forgetting that we're a melting pot and freaking out about how more recent immigrant groups are going to wreck everything because they don't know how to be 'Murcans yet. But eventually they learn. Then they forget that they had to learn and freak out at the next group of immigrants. That's our cycle. It works for everybody, but it takes a couple of generations so people who hate historical context tend to miss it.

2) A big chunk of France's problem has to do with their fraught relationships with their former North African colonies. That's not really issue for us.

3) I'm not sure that we're the freest nation on Earth. How would you even calculate that?

A good answer you gave there, Eddy. My comments:

1) As long as the US keeps being a melting pot and isn't seduced by multiculturalism* maybe you could open your borders to 200 thousand Syrians and make it work. Maybe. France uses a mix of multiculturalism and melting pot and that didn't work for them. France has also been an historical haven for Muslim dissedents (Arab and Persian) but France has also been the biggest victims of Muslim terrorism over the years.

2) Yes. Unfortunately, the USA also hasn't done a good job at assimilating Latinos. In many places of the US, Spanish has become the lingua franca. This smacks more of multiculturalism than of the traditional melting pot.

3) The USA claims to be the freest nation...are you saying that's not true?! All of us in countries run by socialist despots will be crushed if you say otherwise...

y:D

*Multiculturalism is the idea that the different ethnic groups making up a nation are encouraged to keep their culture/traditions and language to the benefit of the nation at large.
