Christians and entertainment

Post by Nessa »

How do you guys personally judge what is ok to watch and what is not.

Do you let the Holy Spirit just guide you.. as it could be different for everyone...

For example every christian may say watching Porn is wrong but what about two actors who are both married..and not to each other.... kissing each other in a movie passionately. Though thats all.

Kirk Cameron for example had his wife step in for the kiss on "Fireproof" replacing the actress in that scene..

What about violence?

The morals of the story?

Would you walk out on a movie at a theatre if it became too uncomfortable or would you just sit it out.. especially if with friends who
aren't bothered by it...

Also what about violence or types of music.. lyrics etc?

I don't watch what I find disgusting. I can watch easily murder, gore, violence, a certain amount of intimacy. As long as there is an artful merit to what to I am watching, I am ok. I never pray about it. Its really no bother asking God when you deep down know what is wrong or not. I just don't watch what irritates me. This includes blasphemy, I certainly don't enjoy that.
It would be a blessing if they missed the cairns and got lost on the way back. Or if
the Thing on the ice got them tonight.

I could only turn and stare in horror at the chief surgeon.
Death by starvation is a terrible thing, Goodsir, continued Stanley.
And with that we went below to the flame-flickering Darkness of the lower deck
and to a cold almost the equal of the Dante-esque Ninth Circle Arctic Night
without.

Initially I thought, who cares, really?

But I`ve given it a bit more thought and it`s really making me think.

I guess it depends on the film/book, whether it`s relevant to the plot and what`s involved. And whether it`s factual or fiction.

One of my favourite books is Roots by Alex Haley. a really moving book but there are some pretty graphic scenes in it. Does that make it wrong to read?

Porn holds no interest for me, nor do violent films/books per se but there are some out there that are really good and need the violence or sex as part of the plot.

Remember reading an article somewhere about a Christian father responding to their teen about watching a violent film. The kids argued that there was only a small amount of violence in the film so surely it would be okay, to which he responded to by cooking some ccokies, really, really delicious cookies with all their favourite ingredients in with one added extra, a tiny, tiny amount of dog poop, told them that surely as it was only a tiny bit it would be okay. They didn`t watch the film.

There's probably been more, but I can recall two movies recently that I just shut off. The first one was Pain & Gain. I think I got maybe 10 minutes into it, and couldn't watch any more. Horrible movie.

The second movie coincidentally had the same actor. The movie was Ted. I had no idea a movie with a teddy bear could be so offensive. And I'm not offended easily.

I`m only 5 ft 3 so it`s really weird when I meet someone smaller than me.

Personally I prefer Smaug. (Might have something to do with the fact he is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. I like him.)

The Desolation of Smaug....

I liked it, I am crazy about dragons :) (And Benedict Cumberbatch)

I`m not a storyteller but I do know one, a little old lady who lived in India and learnt all about the customs of storytelling. I chose the name Storytellers for my bookshop, I just liked the sound of it.
