A poem about Christmas

Post by Silvertusk »

A long time ago on a dusty road
Huddled on a donkey against the cold
Stepping on a journey to change the world
God’s salvation plan unfurled

Mary and Joseph heading to David’s home
A census forcing Jews to roam
Micah calls out the smallest of Judah
A plan to save us all, Hallelujah

It was Eighty miles to Bethlehem town
Through Samaria the road went down.
On through Jerusalem, past the Dead Sea
Mary pregnant on a donkey.

They arrived at last to a busy place.
All the inns were full, there was no space.
About to give birth, the situation was poor.
Mary was exhausted and could take no more.

A kind innkeeper took pity as Mary wept
And gave them a place where the animals slept
Granted at last a shelter to stay
A King to be born in a Palace of Hay.

A sheep or two witnessed the birth of the King.
In the fields the Angels began to sing.
“Glory to God in the highest heaven”
“And peace on earth to all men will be given”

The shepherds were stunned at the glorious sight
As they tended and watched their flocks by night.
Invited to an audience with the Lord of all creation
They left their fire with no hesitation.

Behold Emmanuel asleep in his royal bed
Made not of gold but wood and hay instead
God on earth, the Prince of Peace
Satan’s hold of earth will cease

Jesus is his name, our saviour and King
Frankincense, gold and myrrh was the offering.
God humbles himself to meet face to face.
And shows through the cross, his amazing grace.

So on this Christmas, remember the story
Of when on earth was revealed God’s glory
The greatest gift the world will ever receive
And a promise of eternity to all who believe

Alternatively.....

Christmas – What’s the point.

Christmas is coming. The goose is out of date.
Have not brought any presents and it is getting rather late.
The shops are full of crowds there is people everywhere
Buying breakable gifts for people who don’t care.
Families are feuding from grudges held all year
They come to a head now that Christmas is near.
So much money spent to have one happy day
It comes but once a year, thank God people say.
The designated cook is rushed off her feet.
Preparing all the vegtables and cooking all the meat.
The family are bored, all the presents are unwrapped.
Mother still in the kitchen feeling rather trapped.
Hunger setting in as the time ticks on by
Arguments break out as tempers start to fly.
Tears are shed as the kids fight over toys
Soon they will be broken. Sad girls and boys.
Hundreds of pounds spent on one “happy day”
Bringing peace and goodwill to all men they say.
Truth is harsher as you take a look around.
Christmas on the street where no happiness is found
The poor feel the cold, the rich get depressed.
Greed is rife and the meek is oppressed.
Lost is the joy, through the eyes of a child.
Where is the Virgin, so tender and mild
A story has been lost, Christmas lost its cheer
A time of Celebration, now filled with fear.
A stressful time, people put out of joint.
Ask yourself – Christmas – what is the point!!!!!

What a great contrast indeed so obvious in your two poems.
But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good.
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:21

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.
-- Philippians 1:6
