Reason vs. Spanking

Post by Strix »

Most of America's population thinks it very improper to spank children, so I have tried other methods over the years to control my kids when they had one of "those moments."

One that I've found very effective was for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk. They usually calmed down and stopped misbehaving after our little car ride together.

I've included the photo below of one of my sessions with my son, when he was younger, in case you would like to use this technique. It was very effective!

Nice picture, but on the contrary:

Support for Spanking
Most Americans Think Corporal Punishment Is OK
By Julie Crandall

Nov. 8 — Spanking has its place, most Americans say — but not in school.

The public by a 2-1 margin approves of spanking children in principle, and half of parents say they sometimes do it to their own kids, an ABCNEWS poll found. But an overwhelming majority disapproves of corporal punishment in schools. Sixty-five percent of Americans approve of spanking children, a rate that has been steady since 1990. But just 26 percent say grade-school teachers should be allowed to spank kids at school; 72 percent say it shouldn't be permitted, including eight in 10 parents of grade-schoolers.

Indeed, even among adults who spank their own child, 67 percent say grade-school teachers should not be permitted to spank children at school.

At Home

Among parents with minor children at home, 50 percent report that they sometimes spank their child, while 45 percent do not. That's about the same as it was in a Gallup poll a decade ago.

Spanking's probably okay if you just use your hands to spank them on their butt or other sturdy areas until they behave. Juvenile crime used to be lower when more parents spanked their children.

 that was hilarious.

but, unlike ocho, i don't think spanking is okay under any circumstances. it's disrespectful, humiliating, hurtful, and immature. it teaches children that they are worthless, unimportant, not worthy of respect, and unable to control their own actions. any parent who hits a child is a coward. if you wouldn't hit an adult for the same action, why are you going to hit a child? it shows a lack of communication skills, ignorance, impatience, and a load of other negative character flaws.

hmm, wwjd...i can definately see him smacking a little kid...yep.

Spanking, if done humanely and right, is perfectly acceptable. It helps cut down on juvenile delinquents, or do you not care about that at all?
Obviously, spanking won't prevent every juvenile delinquent, since some people are just naturally bad and desperate. But cutting down on crime is always a good thing.

Prodigal is right. There are so many better ways to discipline a child. If those ways aren't thought of by the parent, spanking is a option they tend to resort to for that reason. When I've spoken with parents who are in favor of it their reasoning has always been along the lines of, "There's nothing better to do."

Anyone here ever watch shows like "Nanny 911" or "Super Nanny"? It's funny, the parents are the ones that really need to be retrained! You start with an infant, and if you lose control it's your own fault. And yes, unless you have a child with a disability of some sort, then it is that simple. The parents who claim otherwise just don't know how to effectively discipline, and very stubbornly refuse to accept that fact!

No. Spanking is a viable option. There wasn't as much juvenile crime when it was more widely practiced. If you're a good child, you shouldn't have to worry about being spanked. :)

I think it has more to do with how seriously parents take defiance. That has changed since the 60's. At that time we were also becoming more aware of the rights of children as people of equal value. Respecting people regardless of race, age, creed or gender was gaining momentum pretty quickly with the general public, (speaking of America.) Respecting children and defiance, along with peace being preferred to war, caused the parents of that generation to be more learly about spanking and discipline in general.

This is pretty open to criticism though.

Too many parents try to be their children's friends rather than being their parents. Discipline is love.

I liked the joke, but I was debating Kate about her opposition to spanking.

I know that OC but you are the one that made this into a Debate instead of taking it for what it was a Joke.
