Hello again Byblos. I'm afraid I need to start with a couple of comments I did not appreciate nor deserve. See now you're complicating it more than I intended. Again, I did not ask the question from a religious perspective but rather from a scientific viewpoint. ... LOL, sorry. I didn't mean to caus...

How the universe came to be?

Not as a religious person, but a person who appreciates science, how do you think the universe came to be? Let's start with that and see where this leads. Hi Byblos! And welome to you too. why don't we start a discussion with a simple question ... how do you think the universe came to be? I'd hate ...

What an entertaining thread! Reading it, I have alternately disagreed and agreed; been incensed and laughed out loud, read tiresomely familiar misconceptions and valuable insights. I'd like to have a shot at thinker's original question. Why Are There Even Atheists? My take is that my atheism is larg...

Welcome Blob, What happened with your mother is very interesting and not unlike what bought me to God. I hope that you will find answers to the questions you have. I am sure when people realize that you are genuinely looking for answers, not trying to pull their beliefs down. Then there will will b...

Come on Brian, lighten up a little. Everyone has their own decisions to make, and each has their own journey. I'm not sure I see condemnation as the best thing here, and it seems like you're really attacking Blob for no reason at all. Thinker's post was a little strong. I think it my be a nice litt...

I also have been thinking that if you are going to go to the extreme on this in the forum with all that you know, atheist or agnostic "lurkers" of the forum will register and then we will end up like the old forum once again with all the hostile skeptic take over. One last thought, I am t...

I think you make a good point there, that non-believers can feel dehumanized by Christians.
Yes. And equally Christians can feel dehumanised by non-believers. There is far too much aggression and defensiveness on both sides.

Thanks for the welcomes all! I wondered how your mother might feel about your calling her Christianity a "hobby"? I think of a hobby as something I might do for an hour or so a day or several times a week, such as work in the garden or play with my graphics software, etc. I totally agree t...

Hello from Blob

Someone asked me why I registered here and so I will oblige. I am an atheist. I always have been. Judge me and insult me and tell me I am an agnostic if you must. I have always had a very deep interest in the 'big' questions. As such I formally studied physics and love informally learning philosophy...

Maybe you are right. What the hell? Anyway, my my interest in theology is really no big deal - I don't want to build it up as some big mystery only to disappoint later!

Well I'm going to hang on to it for a while yet. Sorry thinker, but some of the treatment I have received here so far (not just you), combined with a shortage of warm welcomes from regular posters means I don't feel ready to open up here yet. At the moment I'm feeling slightly like an irritation peo...

You don't have to leave Okay, thinker, I forgive you and I'll give the forum another shot. :) But I would like to say a couple of things. Firstly, yes, I am making an effort to pleasant. But that does not mean underneath there is a nasty, snarling Mr Hyde waiting to burst out. I am just making an e...
