Re: Username Etymology (so to speak)

I stand corrected, I looked it up, and it's in the Webster 1828 Dictionary.
WARHOOP, n. [war and hoop.] The savage yell of war; a yell uttered on entering into battle.

Re: Username Etymology (so to speak)

It's essentially a name that my grandfather made up and slurred, so to speak, based upon the old western movies with depictions of Natives whooping atop mustangs and riding circles around the fort. So what should be a war whoop, was mashed into warhoop, you know, like you all/y'all or going to/gonna...

Username Etymology (so to speak)

So as I peruse the different discussions, I often wonder what the thought is behind the registered username. There appears to be actual proper names in various forms or abbreviations. Initials or abbreviations with numbers. Mini personal statements or creed. Probably even actual nicknames. So if you...

Re: Speaking in tongues.

That's how it was (and is) known precisely when people received the Spirit (became "born again"). I may may be missing something... I cannot find a single instance, of anybody receiving a "miraculous gift," tongues, prophecy, healing, etc. after the day of Pentecost that did not...

Re: Commentary on Gen 1-2

While it is true that Mr. Collins supports framework hypothesis, I don't think it's a stance necessarily incompatible with day-age. I understand the frustration, though, a purely objective commentary is most likely impossible, thus you have to choose which bias you want to study. Also try, Biblical ...

Re: Commentary on Gen 1-2

Genesis 1-4: A Linguistic, Literary, And Theological Commentary by C. John Collins I shared your sentiment Jac. I wanted to know how an ancient Hebrew read the creation account and what he took away from it. I wanted a biblical understanding of creation outside of the noise of science and debates. M...

Re: can god be good if he created evil?

Sorry lost track of this one... so where were we? Oh yeah, evil... existence/nonexistence, created/not created. 1. Only things can be created; 2. Evil is not a thing; 3. Therefore, evil cannot be created. Excellent point which is what I was hoping would come out of my previous post. I'll spare every...

Re: Where do I go from here?

As I've said before, I'm NOT trying to impugn your beliefs. Rather I'm trying to explain my doubts. Fair enough. And as I stated earlier on this topic, a good debate may raise an eyebrow or gain a nominal concession, but it won't win anybody to the faith; that's a relational thing. The Romans might...

Re: Heaven

The point is that if God can exist outside of time which is a dimension of this physical universe (since God isn't contained to a physical body within this physical universe) then He can exist outside of the universe's dimension of time. I don't understand this statement. You just said that if God ...

Re: Where do I go from here?

Dear Sleepykid, There are many intelligent and well spoken christians that post on this board, that write books, etc. who, irregardless of differences in theology or doctrine, have one thing in common, and that is the love of God. And I say this because the answers you seek will not be found on a co...

Re: can god be good if he created evil?

Let's go back to the original post and see if it stands on its merits; the first half anyway, because if the first half is jacked, then the second half is irrelevant to the topic. a. God created everything. b. Evil exists. -------------- c.God created evil. In order for this to be a logical statemen...

Re: Heaven

Well, Heaven is eternal, and so is God. God exists outside of time. It is logical to assume that since Heaven is eternal, it must exist outside of time as well. I think that statement would qualify as a non sequitur. Also, eternal is in reference to time; hence, without time, you have no frame of r...

Re: serious one, sinning after Christ

Romans 7:25-8:2 (I think the chapter break is poorly placed, it makes more sense without it...) 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. 1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are i...

Re: Literal snake in the Garden of Eden?

God says : "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." He says "die" not "spiritually die" It doesn't matter if the death referred to is spiritual or physical because we a...

Re: Speaking in tongues.

I love B.W.'s post, but I believe the stories are a testament to the power of prayer, not the gift of speaking in tongues. Paul says that when we are compelled to pray but don't know what to say that our heart will groan for us in words we don't understand. Perhaps on those occasions we can't help b...
