Re: Negation of Free Will

I'd actually say that the reverse is true. If God did not exist, there could be no such thing as free will. How could there be? You'd be reduced to strict physicalism/determinism. Some non-believers will say up front that there's no such thing as free will of any kind, and those that don't... well,...

Re: Catholicism

Everybody, I don't mean to overwhelm you with things to read. But this Historical Introduction is essential to this conversation, I think. because it shows the Council of Ephesus thought it taught infallibly and that Pope Celestine taught with St. Peter's authority. You'll find the same introduction...

Re: Secured Salvation

Danny and friends, I don't believe in secured salvation. In my opinion, neither did the Early Church. If it interests you. please read Chapter 16 of a first or second-century document called The Didache . http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/didache-lightfoot.html For me, 1 John 5:15-17, is mo...

Re: Purgatory

Classy, gentlemen. An example to us all of how to conduct a discussion of this kind. No frothing at the mouth, no raised blood pressures. A little too short for my liking, but dignity prevails all round. We are a brotherhood first and foremost. And that has shone through. We'll leave the f...

Re: Purgatory

I forget the chapter and verse numbers of a passage in the Book of Revelation where St. John says nothing defiled can go into heaven. A soul is something, and for Catholics, defilements would include vices, sins we still need to make up for, punishment we still need to take. . . Yes, Christ died for...

Re: What is "the Church"?

Now, after I've read the survey, I don't understand the discussion's title. The title seems to ask us to define the Church, the phrase "the Church," or both. The survey asks whether Christians should attend church services, but those two topics are very different from each other.

Re: The Doctrine of Purgatory

1. just because you rebuke it does not make it false, try to be more understanding 2. please stop looking at the little differances and look at the huge similarities, seriously we are all christians we all believe Jesus Christ is the Lord and what He did for us, why dont you consider lookin at the ...

Re: The Doctrine of Purgatory

Wow, someone brought up a subject even I know about. What a way to begin 2012. Here's a link to a document that quotes some ancient evidence for what the Catholic Church teaches about purgatory (http://www.catholic.com/tracts/the-roots-of-purgatory). This will show you that the Third Council of Cart...

Re: Reformed Theology Discussion

I'm using the term more narrowly in this thread and I clarify what I'm addressing in my first few posts so hopefully that helps to make clear what we're talking about. Thanks. I think I need to join conversations about topics I'm more familiar with. You're welcome of course, but as you're Catholic ...

First thing that came to my mind when I read this verse was immediately "free thinkers"( those who think they think freely while having their thoughts governed by the all mighty Dawkins) "They Promise freedom, while they themselves are slaves~for people are slaves to whatever h...

Re: Reformed Theology Discussion

Please forgive me for a silly question, everyone. What does "reformed" mean in the phrase "reformed theology?" "Dutch Reformed?" Computer science and philosophy are my fields. I know some Catholic dogmatic theology, too, but most evangelical jargon is new to me.

Re: Negation of Free Will

Hey inlove, Remember, my friend, that temptations aren't sins. You can fight back when the Devil or a demon tempts you to sin. After all, the Bible teaches that that Satan will go away when you resist him. Maybe you've already been resisting him because you said you wanted to commit some sins, not t...

Re: Meaning and purpose to Atheists...

No replies? Well I want to say that I read about Nietzsche and it seems that he died from a "mysterious mental illness". Honestly, I think he collapsed under the stress of trying to accept that there is no objective morality, which he knew his worldview implied. :shakehead: This (http://w...
