Re: salvation

Sorry if the above seemed a bit flippant. didn't to me...thought it quite good. There is a thread of reasoning that runs through John's gospel, one phrase leads to the next:"No-one has greater love than this: That he lay down his life for his friends", "You are my friends if you do a...

Wise words...especially since I don't see Jac or ttoews being swayed from what they sincerely believe...but who knows. Miracles do happen. now hold on there FFC,....I note you said sincerely believe....are you suggesting that we should distinguish between sincere belief and insincere belief?...

Jac3510, I believe (with few reservations) that I have discussed this with you before. As an aside here, in RT, there is such a thing as "spurious faith." RTers freely admit there are people who once believed but then fell away. So they are forced to say, "but their faith wasn't real....

Re: Progressive Creationism: Short Defence Wanted

If you had to write something short and not too technical, what would you tell her? How about: It is good that you believe that evolution is a process of creation. Every Christian perspective understands that evolution occurred and so, for a Christian, it is not a question of whether evolution is a...

What Non-Mormon scholar is going to place his career on the line by even caring to prove that the BoM is true? not prove, merely present evidence of existence of a place/path taken. We see scholars presenting evidence on the location of Troy and of Jericho and the scholars aren't all greek pagan, C...

hey Sargon, hope you had a good Christmas....your remarks below are typical of those to which I object (for reasons stated): The Book of Mormon says that a place existed along their path that was called Nahom. yes, but the BoM does not specify where that path ran...beyond saying that it neared the b...

Sargon, I believe Egyptian and Hebrew are both w/i the Afro-Asian family of languages, but that Egyptian is not semitic. Further, since this thread is about NHM/Nahom and my list of assumptions I thought I might as well post that list here too (and in the process add another assumption to the front ...

However, I am not entirely sure that this is the best way to go about our deciding. I don't think it was a bad approach wrt the first assumption....but I agree it will be seriously lacking wrt some of the others...but I don't know that a better approach exists....and that is a problem for anyone wa...

....Of these options, I see a 75% probability that Nahom was the name given by the locals before Lehi arrived. I was betting you'd come in at about 80%-90% and so I think your estimate is "very fair" given your biases. Our biases are different, and so I am in the 50-66% range. I think 75%...

There is no assuming going on here. You have suggested that either Nephi deliberatley set it apart from the others, or he was not careful with his words as you suggest he wasn't in other passages. If he was careful, then he certainly did distinguish it from the others. If he was not careful, then h...

Re: Nahom

I hope you dont mind if I have started a new thread on this. no sweat... This is the only place along their journey that had a name that Nephi didn't mention that they themselves had named. are you sure that they named all the others? Here's the passage you quoted re Bountiful and Irreantum: And we...

I am happy to see that you have familiarized yourself with the issue. It allows me to jump right to the analysis. Here (IMHO) are the assumptions that must be made in order for the NHM altar finds to be viewed as authenticating the BoM: 1) that the city described in the BoM was named by locals and n...

I thought you wanted to discuss the claims that NHM correspond with Nahom in the BoM? I am not prepared to say much about the valley of Lemuel, the river of Laman, shazer, irreantum, or any other place name. I have however brushed up on the issue of Nahom, and would be delighted to participate in a...

The LDS's (in particular, Jeff Lindsay's found here ) claims with respect to the “river Laman” and the valley of Lemuel are as follows: In general: The critics chuckle that there are NO RIVERS flowing into the Red Sea, at least not anything that could be said to be "continually" flowing……...

Recent finds/discoveries (as described by Mormon sites with a bit of editing) .....I don't know if any non-Mormons have ever went to the "Lemeul" and "Bountiful" sites to verify the claims of the LDS, but I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt: Re the/one place the L...
