I disagree that this leads to salvation by faith plus. This is probably the crux of the misunderstanding between the RCC and the reformation. The RCC is mistakenly believed to advocate salvation by faith and works. That is totally wrong. Pope John Paul II himself unequivocally stated in the second ...

Gal 5:2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. Gal 5:3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Gal 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are f...

Off-topic. Just wanted to let you guys know that even though I'm not contributing to this thread, I am enjoying it rather immensely. I know everyone's busy and so am I (especially lately) but please keep it going whenever you can. P.S. B.W., You couldn't be offensive even if you tried. Please keep u...

Byblos, I do see it as very important. The question goes to the heart of the extent of the atonement. Although, for the record, that's really imprecise theology. "Atonement" doesn't appear in the NT at all . . . but, that's what the debate has been labeled. Now, our view of the extent and...

I can only assume that was directed at me. If so, my sincerest apologies. I didn't intend any of that to be condescending, although I can see how you would have taken it that way. One of the things I've realized, and I'm continuing to conclude on almost a daily basis, is that there are some very, v...

Byblos, Let me just preface this by saying that I want to be really careful about avoiding pushing a particular belief in this thread. I have other threads for that ;). Seriously, there are some discussions in which I advocate and others in which I question. This is one of the latter, so please don...

What is the point of praying unless eventually they will rise again? If you're a Catholic, the point of praying is to get them out of purgatory, which is exactly what Catholics always say this verse is saying. Whether or not they rise again is irrelevant to the issue of them benefitting Makes sense...

And there we go again, of course 'your children' doesn't mean your children because we're exegeting the English, right? It doesn't mean 'your babies', no. Yes, you are exegeting the English. Yes, of course, how could I have missed it? We need to toss out every English-translated bible and all go ba...

Byblos: I only have one question for you, and it has nothing to do with a "trumping" idea here. I suspect I could find any catholic source and get my question very easily answered, but you're here, so it makes it easy. What is the Catholic understanding of Eph 2:8-10 and Rom. 4:1-4? These...

What ritual did baptism replace? Circumcision (as per Paul in Col. 2:11—12). Who was circumcised? Infants. You are falsely equating baptism with circumcision. The fact that baptism replaced circumcision does not mean that baptism takes place in the same way or under the same circumstances as circum...

You might as well baptize a turnip. 8) What ritual did baptism replace? Circumcision (as per Paul in Col. 2:11—12). Who was circumcised? Infants. Where in scripture does it say infants cannot be baptized? Nowhere. You can apply your own beliefs any which way you want but those are the facts. ...

Typical Fortigurn argument, putting words in people's mouths. Where did I say 'taking account of purgatory'. I agree with you he said 'taking account of the resurrection'. I didn't say you were claming it said 'taking account of purgatory', I said that you were claiming that it was done 'taking acc...

Hi Byblos, I was speaking to a Catholic friend last nigh, and he mentioned that Catholic doctrine teaches that Jesus sinned three times. I can only remember two of the three he mentioned: Jesus cursing the fig tree, and Jesus being disrespectful to His parents when He stayed behind to teach in the ...
