Re: How do atheists understand chance, in re: origin of life

Well, I'm not atheist (nor have I ever called myself atheist), and I very rarely discuss this stuff with atheists, so you might take this post with a grain of salt. But here's my concept of their reasoning: Because atheists don't believe in a creative god and (logical) atheists accept that ex nihilo...

The Incredible Design of the Earth and Our Solar System

In short: yes, our solar system, and especially our planet, are extremely unique and special.

Re: About chance and arguments.

Above was just my initial reaction to the question. After a bit more thought, I'd like to add that I think calling chance "the unpredictable change in a set of variables" in a way ascribes causative power to chance. It's like saying, "We had this set of variables, so we calculated this outcome. But ...

Re: About chance and arguments.

Would you say then that chance is the unpredictable change in a given set of variables? Well, I think it depends on how much we don't know about the event in question. It is predictable to some extent, that's what chance is in my opinion: a tool used to predict likelihood. The accuracy of the predi...

Re: About chance and arguments.

Chance shouldn't be something we have to worry about. It's really nothing more than a mathematical tool to tell us the likelihood that something will or will not happen. I agree that chance has no creative power, because chance is not a "thing" at all, it is just an idea. I think Yrreg is on the rig...

Not true! It's that way in America, too.

Re: Time scale? a very long time indeed.

So what translation do you recommend? I can easily get a NiV from a church in my city, should be no problem. My opinion- NIV (New International Version) to start with, ESV (English Standard Version) later if you want to do more in depth studies. NIV is easy to read, but it's more of a thought-for-t...

Quick Prayer

Hello everyone. My mom is a teacher and she had a student that recently passed away. He was a 5th grader, 12 years old. My mom has been burdened by this because it's made her realize that you never know when what you say will be the last thing you say to that person, among other things. Please say a...

Re: The Amazing Atheist

So if God can be eternal, why can't the universe? What if the Universe and the very first organisms are the real eternal ones? If the very first organisms were eternal, that would mean they'd still be here today. Where are they? Can you show them to me? Also, the universe can not be eternal because...

Re: The Amazing Atheist

If god is eternal, what IS he? Is it even a person? Is it an energy? You definitely emphasized the right word there. God simply IS. He is so many things that we can imagine and so many more things that we can not imagine. There are not any words in any language adequate enough to describe. That's w...

Re: The Amazing Atheist

Regardless whether anyone can prove origin or not, your idea of origin is the basis of your entire worldview. You need to use the rationality and logic you claim to hold so tightly to and take a serious look at origin. There's really only two options: either everything began naturally on its own, or...

Re: Beginning of Atheistic Thinking?

I don't know how this site feels about Dr. Hugh Ross and the Reasons to Believe website, but I found this article there that really fits with this topic: http://www.reasons.org/resources/publications/facts-faith/2002issue10#world_religions The point that stuck out to me the most was number 3: 3. The...

Re: Beginning of Atheistic Thinking?

What I'm saying here is that while most Jewish scholars deny the Trinity in the OT, however, the Trinity does seem to be apparent in the OT. OK, I see what you mean now. I am aware of how the OT shows the Trinity (I am currently going through the study laid out in this thread ), and I do believe th...

Re: Beginning of Atheistic Thinking?

Yes it does, thank you Gman. Was this an extensive course you took, or was it just a quick one-semester type class? Thanks to Kurieuo too. I haven't studied Judaism, so it's always been my understanding that Jesus as Messiah is the basic difference between Christians and Jews. But now that you have ...
