thank you, everyone

I was raised Christian by my mother, but never understood it. I grew out of it in my teen years, as she had a very simple (not incorrect) faith that my strictly logically inclined brain couldn't comprehend. I had read plenty of philosophy books, articles, etc. and took a very naturalistic approach t...

Re: Evolution/ID/Creationism in the Classroom

1) Should evolution be part of the compulsory biology education system? 2) Should Intelligent Design, creationism, or any other counterpart/rival to evolution be taught in schools as a science alongside evolution? 3) If yes to 2, how should this be handled in schools? Should ID/creationism be taugh...

Re: The foundation for a meaninglful life or action.

I disagree with (2) as all the things absent in (1) still exist, but I can't imagine an afterlife scenario that doesn't include some sort of God so the point is moot anyways. I can't really see anyone disagreeing with (1). Dom, this is my original response to the question. Reasons were given as to ...

Re: Any NFL fans out there? How about that Tebow?

There are not many people in the spotlight as humble or genuine as Tebow.

He might not be the best QB we've ever seen but his attitude is in the right place, and it has been even since college. And that is why this man wins games.

Re: Free thinkers

Echo, I'm talking about the militant atheist that call themselves "free thinkers". I'd say most intelligent Christians are free thinkers, especially the Christians in the reformation, they are the definition of free thought in my mind. I know, but I'd like to dispel any possible negative connotatio...

Re: Free thinkers

You can be a free thinker as well as a Christian, it's when you assume your intelligence to be so far above that of everyone else where it becomes a problem. Then you start getting the all too characteristic arrogance of atheists.

The basic ideas of free thought aren't inherently bad.

Re: A few questions

B.W., re: “b) An atheist who thought like that would not be an atheist...” How so? Are you saying that the person in (b) believes - is convinced - that a supreme being exists? I may be wrong, but he seemed to be implying that atheists are all driven in part by a hate of God, and therefore they do n...

Re: A few questions

a) Are there any scientists/philosophers, who are actually interested in solving the issue of the meaning of existence / creation of universe? Who weigh the arguments of both sides equally and come to some conclusions, but are not prejudiced for or against the existence of God (is that even possibl...

Re: The foundation for a meaninglful life or action.

How do you figure that a prerequisite for being eternal is that it must have purpose? I would like to hear about that. I think that eternal things at the very least are capable of having purpose. I'm just operating off of conventional wisdom, that atheism is purposeless because of it's finite natur...

Re: The foundation for a meaninglful life or action.

Hmmm...well, can you explain further? You say theres a prereq for being eternal, but how did you come to that conclusion? Most theists deny the opposite, for example they say an atheist cannot have purpose because their lives are rather fleeting on the grand scheme of things. Your hypothetical just...

Re: Objective Morality?

In an other thread domokunrox used the example that earth cannot be both round and not round, I think both are partly true, it's roughly round. Yes but the second you use the word "partly" the idea of a round earth and flat earth both lose their repsective meanings. Something cannot both be a circl...

Re: Science and Determinism

What is determinism? Then we restart reality from that point. Everything should happen exactly the same. Very 'newtonian' and correct in a gross physical way over a set time. As there is no way to test what is said here, drawing conclusions from it is a fruitless exercise. As for particles being "u...

Re: Planet that can hold life found and confirmed

Let's all remember that article a few weeks back about how einstein was wrong and the universe is going to explode because the speed of light has been breached

Atheists cling to these stories like the boy who cried wolf, any hint of anti-theist material and they start up the alarms.

Re: WBC

Sure, good point, because it needs repeating. God is perfectly just in damning the whole of mankind if He so chooses. Man's unregenerate, sinful state leaves him without grounds for complaint. Hence Rick's 'objection' is a very human and emotionally-charged objection, and not a valid objection give...
