Re: Why Did God Make It So Difficult

jlay wrote:Good point. I've found a wonderful commentary. It is reading through the bible with the early church fathers. It is a verse by verse exposition with commentary from the likes of Origen, Chrysostom, Clement, etc.
That sounds very interesting. Where could I find something like that?

Re: Lust

Why would lust not be included as part of sexual immorality? or even 'desires of the flesh'? Does lust promote love, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control?

Re: Question about the "rapture" or lack thereof

What? How much does God really love us if He could just "get tired of us after so long"? Doesn't the Bible say His love endures forever? And about getting bored in heaven, don't you think an infinite and all-knowing God could keep creating new experiences for us to enjoy?

Fair enough. I've been content just following along with this thread, and I'd be happy to continue just doing that. I'm bound to learn something along the way.

Re: Infinite punishment for finite sins

If they are in hell then they chose to be away from God (in this life). But if they were annihilated then first, I think that violates God's character being the God of the living, and second, it also violates God's character of fairness. The fair way is that the same way people who chose (in this l...

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

Whatever you end up settling on for god's properties, if he's capable of fixing something, and morally should fix it, and it's not fixed, then either god isn't fulling his "morally should"s, or isn't capable, or isn't there. Or there is another reason for it that we don't understand becau...

Woops, looks like you posted after I made an edit. I added a question if you'd care to address it. Of course I may still be misunderstanding and if I am then I apologize.

Re: Infinite punishment for finite sins

Maybe I misunderstood you, but it looks like you did. You said, "the choice to remain in His absence while giving others the choice to be in His presence for eternity." I assumed you were talking about people in hell and heaven, maybe I was wrong. Otherwise, how would God be robbing them o...

Re: "Everything is God's fault."

But I do know what omnipotent and omniscient mean. Being able to do literally anything means you can make an awesome plan that keeps everyone happy. Omnipotence means you can do "anything", "Making plans" falls under the category of "anything". Hey, I'm more of a lurke...

Re: Infinite punishment for finite sins

The ultimate act of mercy from God is that he provided the means of salvation in Christ. I do not see annihilation as an act of mercy but of cruelty for robbing some of the choice to remain in His absence while giving others the choice to be in His presence for eternity. How do we have choice after...

Re: Infinite punishment for finite sins

Looks like you guys agree that you'll just start going in circles soon, so... Throwing this out for consideration. Jesus only addressed his comments regarding hell toward religious people, not "sinners." Why might that be? I'm interested in this, but I haven't seen anyone mention it yet.

Re: Matthew 1: 1-17 Compare to Luke 3: 23-38

Hello. I was reading this article on the main site and remembered this thread. I thought maybe you would find it interesting. I was reading this part in particular: Typically when a genealogy is telescoped, the number of names is reduced to an aesthetically pleasing number (usually 10 or a multiple ...

Re: 1 Corinthians 8 through 10, eating meat sacrificed to id

Hello Christian2. If you're still looking for a commentary on these chapters, here is one I would recommend: http://www.twft.com/?page=C2000 That is a link to the library of sermons by pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel. He goes through the whole Bible, so you can scroll down to find a sermon on 1...

Re: 1 Corinthians 8 through 10, eating meat sacrificed to id

I disagree with that article; I think it came to the wrong conclusion. The article says this: "While Paul allows initially in his argument; he may eventually prove it wrong. This is the case in 1 Corinthians 8-10. In chapter 8, he allows those Corinthians who view themselves as being more spiri...

Re: 1 Corinthians 8 through 10, eating meat sacrificed to id

Although I do see where Paul warned people about abstaining from sexual immorality, I do not see where he warned his followers of all four in one sentence. As I noted in my last post, it was James that suggested those four things, not Paul. What specifically about 1 Corinthians 8-10 do you find dif...
