Re: Can an Evangelical Christian Accept Evolution?
Natural selection on its own can not account for all the diversity we see. It is certainly far from an agreed consensus in the scientific community. To my knowledge, we can count the number of biologists who reject evolution on one hand. As for those biologists who accept evolution and also happen ...

Re: An argument against "fine turning" of the universe
You say it's a seemingly ad-hoc axiom. People do not share the same thoughts and have different opinions of what is logical. Can you claim that others agree with your logic in this particular context? Unfortunately I haven't found any reviews of Collins' work in Blackwell, so I don't have anything ...

Re: An argument against "fine turning" of the universe
In my judgment, the strongest arguments against fine-tuning take into account specific formulations. Generalized arguments such as the one in the link in the OP are not nearly as powerful, I don't think. For example, consider Robin Collins' formulation from The Blackwell Companion to Natural Theolog...

Re: Can an Evangelical Christian Accept Evolution?
For someone who believes in no God, I can understand why such a person has no choice but evolution to understand how humanity arose. It is really the only human origin story open to such a person. In modern times, Lamarckan evolution has been quite popular. In antiquity, Aristotelian spontaneous ge...

Re: The historical evidence for Christ
While I'm sure that this position is common among apologists (e.g. Matt Slick, Greg Boyd, etc.), it's not at all common among historians. Richard Carrier, for instance, writes: Some have tried to appeal to a headless (and thus nameless) inscription as proving that Quirinius held the governorship of ...

Re: The Multiverse Theory.
the fact that so many prominent scientists see it as a potential explanation for the fine-tuning observed in this universe highlights the strength of evidence backing the inference that a Designer fashioned this universe. I don't see how. The fine-tuning argument as I have encountered it (e.g. Robi...

Re: The historical evidence for Christ
I don't understand what you're trying to do, here. What do you mean, "evidence for Christ"? Are you talking about the secular issue of the historicity of Jesus? Or are you taking a supernaturalist approach, and giving evidence that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah promised by God? Or something...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
Just to be clear, although I do have theological problems with certain combinations of doctrines, especially those involving damnation, I haven't been referring to those in this thread, nor do I plan to talk about them in the near future. I was only pointing out that the Calvinist doctrine of total ...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
Yes God agrees that we shouldn't be tortured, Well that's quite a statement, and I see robyn hill echoed it. I don't think too many of your Christian peers would agree with you both, but I'm glad you dissent from them. In that sense it's a catch 22.. Because atheism has no empirical evidence either...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
Also, about Hell.. I don't believe that God sends us to Hell, but it is on our own merit... In other words, we send ourselves to Hell. God, on judgment day, will simply expose the darkness that we put into our hearts.. The darkness, along with the choices we made in this life. Were they in love or ...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
Hatsoff, it's hard to convey to someone without a relationship with Christ how arvelous it is. Like plato's cave, we try to convince you of the beauty of the outside world when you are entranced with shadows dancing on the wall. You mention eternal torture. Here's one other aspect of it. If you hav...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
A person is born with an predisposition of hostility to God (just as you demonstrate,) This is your personal religious belief, not something which has been "demonstrate[d]" by my behavior. it isn't about what I believe, it is about what the Bible says. You may not want it to be about what...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
It doesn't really matter what you do, hatsoff, because nice or nasty, you are estranged from God. As long as you stay in that condition, you're toast. It isn't about what I believe, it is about what the Bible says. Your use of the words « deserve to be tortured eternally » give us a glimpse into wh...

Re: I Don't Understand Atheism
It 's not that you are a horrible person.. But we all fail at some point of "perfect" love. That is what sin is.. Imperfect love. The only real person that was perfect in his love was Jesus. So, it's not that we are bad people, but we are not perfect in love.. If we want to be "accur...
