Re: Morality
Now, Kurieuo, answers to your last two posts. http://discussions.godandscience.org/viewtopic.php?p=230886#p230886 It seems that you are thinking that there is a big difference between instincts and conscience. To me it is just a matter of degree. An instinct makes the animal mother not to eat her of...

Re: Morality
I have noticed that you think that C. S. Lewis' book Mere Christianity is of interest. I have now started to read the first chapters again. (The Doodle Youtubes are amusing but I prefer reading the book. It's easier to follow the arguments in a book). One important point is in chapter three (page 1...

Re: Morality
Kurieuo, Finally answers to two of your old posts, this one and the following: http://discussions.godandscience.org/viewtopic.php?p=230904#p230904 For example, if we take China's one child policy (now two), then it is good and honourable for a woman who gives birth to a child beyond their "chil...

Re: Aquinas five ways
One of the things that needs to be understood with Aquinas is that he wasn't always thinking "linear sequence" but more "hierarchical sequence". Think what is sustaining and actualizing HERE AND NOW as opposed to "down the line". I am sorry Paul, I have problems to see...

Re: Aquinas five ways
Byblos, I find that the correct way to treat this problem is to print out all posts that you, Kurieuo and others have written on Aquinas besides all the references and lay them on a big table and try to find out what's all about. But currently I can't do that so I just try to answer your last post a...

Re: Aquinas five ways
Kurieuo, When I read what you write I remember an occasion many years ago. In my job I was discussing a technical issue, something about the logic of some software structure with a person that I didn't know very well. I had real problems to understand what he said but after more than one hour of dis...

Re: Aquinas five ways
Thanks Byblos,
This made things a bit clearer to me but I have still lot of thoughts and comments. I also saw your post about PSR but I would prefer discussing the second wave first. I have too little time and also a backlog discussing morality with Kurieuo. Hope to be back in a few days.

Re: Aquinas five ways
If you would like people to argue for something like the Kalam aside from Aquinas, then feel free to open up the discussion in that direction. There are modern Christians (including at this board) who'd defend such forms, akin to those Aquinas refuted in his time when he actually defended criticise...

Re: Aquinas five ways
Kuieuo, I understand that the Aquinas' arguments are based on an Aristotelian and Thomistic metaphysic and is exemplified by Aristotelian physics. The connection to outdated physics makes it difficult to a modern materialist to understand and comprehend part of Aquinsas' arguments. When I started vi...

Re: Aquinas five ways
Nils, While I'm no Aquinas expert, I am familiar with the mistake many make with understanding his arguments. In your post above, you make the same error in understanding as many others. Particularly your premise #6 makes obvious the misunderstanding you have of Aquinas' argument. Kurieuo, I apprec...

Re: Skepticism and the Principle of Sufficient Reason
But yours arguments are new to me so don't be too upset by my comments. To address this first, not at all. This is exactly the type of discussion I envisioned when I recommended the PSR. Yes but I was talking more generally. I don't remember to have seen this argument before you brought it up. - Wh...

Re: Skepticism and the Principle of Sufficient Reason
- What do you mean by "self-explanatory"? Please give some examples. - What do you mean by saying that a self-explanatory explanation is "absolute necessary"? As it turns out, from logic and reason alone, we can say a great deal about a thing being self-explanatory. But before w...

Re: Skepticism and the Principle of Sufficient Reason
K, what I think needs some simple bullet points, concern the professor's points about infinite regression and that all things contingent require a cause, and not the strawman assertions many pointlessly set out to refute. Feel free to do so then. I personally don't like leading a horse to water if ...

Re: Aquinas five ways
These principles are based on everything in our world. 1.All things have a cause. 2.All things that have a cause are caused by something else. 3.All things are willed into existence. 4.There can be no infinite regression based on these principles. I mean it simplifies everything but it is based on ...
