Iowa mother left 4 kids home alone while she went to Europe, police say

How can we ever teach children to be responsible, if we can't leave them alone while we run off to Europe?

I'm not sure which is worse...
1) the hamsters in the picture look like rats
2) the hamsters in the picture, look like an appetizer plate garnished with lettuce
