A reposnse to stephen fry and the problem of evil

Post by Silvertusk »

If anyone is interested here is a recording of the sermon i did on that infamous Stephen Fry clip and the problem of evil. It also incorporates the video clips I used as wel.

Be gentle with me as it is my first ever you tube video.

Probably runs best from a PC rather than phone.

I listened to the first 15 minutes or so.
I stopped because it seemed to reiterate much of what Craig has put out, only I found it more labourous to listen to.
Maybe it was the voice tone, I don't know. Much better reading it in a book perhaps.

I think with smart aleck comments like what Stephen Fry put out, you'd be better off working out short quips back.
Koukl (str.org) has called it something like "soundbite" arguments. And your goal is really to leave a stone in their shoe (an irritation for them to consider).

So pretend you're in a situation where someone asks a certain questions or bags your beliefs.
You have about 30 seconds, at most perhaps a minute to respond.
What's the most powerful soundbite response you can give back?

THAT, would be more impressive than something better left in a Craig apologetic book.
Really, I think Fry's comments don't deserve the attention that they were given.

I tried Silver. I'm not sure if my internet was playing up but it was very slow loading and I ran out of time. But I will try again. I am keen to hear your insight.

Err... btw, did I go easy on you Silver?
Somehow I missed in my speed reading that you did it. I don't know how. Sorry!

I'll give it a better listen later. Interested to listen to the fuller version now.
To add to my previous post, I was busy working with head phones on so can sometimes tune out.
Once I heard some of Craig's arguments (which I've heard over a hundred times) then I just think I've heard it all before so...

Still, out of interest... why did you pick out Fry?

No apologies necessary my friend. Your opinion is perfectly valid and very welcome.

As for Fry, It just felt like a good way of leading into topic to the problem of evil and suffering. I did it at my church a week or so ago, and it was quite well received. My voice does not come over great on the recording I admit - and hearing my own voice makes me cringe - people assured me it was better live in the church and it did help a few people get over a stumbling block. You are right though- I did use Craig but I also used a lot of C.S. Lewis when I came to the emotional problem of evil, I also used a bit of Hugh Ross for good measure. I think there is a bit of me in there somewhere as well.
