To explain the New Testament understanding of the true Israel of God, I would like to offer this simple diagram.

I hope it makes this important subject clear, and I welcome any discussion.

Couldn't the Gentiles be grafted in before the church age? There were a number of saved Gentiles.

Sure, in there ones and twos. Im referring to Pauls teaching where he speaks of the natural branches being broken off and the wild olive being grafted in. This happened after the cross.

The true Israel of God also includes the faithful among the children of Israel in Old Testament times. And believe it or not, it still includes national Israel today also. Reason is, God gave them promises He won't go back on involving their calling of election, because in final they are going to accept His Salvation through Christ Jesus too.

God put a spiritual stupor upon Israel in part so The Gospel would go to the Gentiles (Rom.11). We are not to be conceited and think they are lost today even though the majority of them have still yet to believe on our Lord Jesus Christ. That was Paul's warning to us in Rom.11.
