Re: The possibility of evil is good? Love of good vs Hate of evil

So Patrick, what do you think? - - I think this question in particular is pretty insightful Is it error to teach what true right is and what true wrong is? If not, then why bother teaching our own children these things? In a lot of ways, how God relates to us can be understood by how we relate to o...

Re: The possibility of evil is good? Love of good vs Hate of evil

There is no good in evil, it's an oxymoron to say. Like saying there is darkness in light. It's simply, He created beings with self determination. I can't help but suspect you misunderstood my point, though to be fair my framing it as "possibility of evil is good" doesn't help matters. Th...

Re: Was Jesus tempted sexually when he walked this earth?

I thought this analysis was pretty relevant to the topic: http://www.jasonstaples.com/bible/most-misinterpreted-bible-passages-1-matthew-527-28/ Matthew 5:27–28: Ἠκούσατε ὅτι ἐρρέθη· οὐ μοιχεύσεις. ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πᾶς ὁ βλέπων γυναῖκα πρὸς τὸ ἐπιθυμῆσαι αὐτὴν ἤδη ἐμοίχευσεν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ α...

Re: Self Control

Mostly when I feel it's not important. Emphasis on "feel." Like when I was working with kids, even though I found it very hard to stop swearing the week before I started, by the time I started I had all but gotten myself to stop. I do cut myself more breaks when I'm tired, but I tend to be...

Re: What's God and what's not

Part of the answer is that when people say God told them to do this or that. If it directly contradicts Scripture or involves pursuit of, or results in, sin - then we know God did not so instruct. A few years ago, I came across two sermons that addressed the issue of knowing God's will. They were s...

Re: The possibility of evil is good? Love of good vs Hate of evil

I think, the hardest thing to explain, is how "free will" is created or allowed as part of creatures. One reason perhaps is because we are largely only familiar with a mechanical materialistic world. So then, we're wired to understand matters a certain way. For example, we might visualise...

The possibility of evil is good? Love of good vs Hate of evil

Where did evil come from? Where did Satan's choice to do evil come from? And why did God allow Eve to be swayed by Satan? I've been seeking answers for these questions, but for all my seeking I can only conclude that it must be that, one way or another, the potential to do evil is good. I've been wo...

Re: Is being an atheist irrational?

I don't think of atheism as irrational, but all the views I've heard for it that I found coherent I also found uncompelling. For instance, I talked to someone who believed there was good reason to think that science is only incidentally practical, and ultimately we're simply imposing our ideas of co...

Re: "Tree" or "Web" of Life? A Tale of Red Wolf "Species"

Yet, there is more to this, which also poses some significant problems for evolutionary thought. The concept of "species", while helpful to communicate about this and that particular form of life, grouping animals neatly into groups of complexes, ought to be thwart with problems if specia...

Re: harambe and death

Excluding when the perpetrator goes unpunished? Not really. People can agree killing an innocent person is a serious crime, so it virtually never goes unpunished. People just disagree on the value and innocence of animals. If the average adult were dragging a child around like Harambe was, they'd kn...

Re: New Theological discourse happening

What common ground? Jesus himself these things: I am not talking about salvation; actually, I mean basically the opposite. If someone finds Christian teachings objectionable, perhaps the better apologetic is simply showing the fruit of those beliefs. Put another way, many people nowadays seem to be...

Re: New Theological discourse happening

I think the major problem with this change is that it actually makes Christians seem more intolerant. Because now you have people holding beliefs incompatible with Christianity alongside Christian beliefs, so it makes it look like Christians are simply adhering to unnecessarily exclusive beliefs whe...

Re: Chrislam

One can't reconcile them. As far as I'm aware, Islam was created by someone who believed Christianity had been adulterated with falsehoods over time. So a compromise between the two wouldn't really make sense.

Re: Do you know God?

I think the question of why religion seems to match up with national borders is put too rhetorically. I see it more as a starting point to ask many other questions. How many religious people have honestly searched for the truth? Is there any pattern of conversions to one particular religion over any...

Re: Falsely Accused of Murder

I don't know about a percentage, but if it were me I'd turn myself in unless I stumbled upon reports that made me think I was being framed. I do think it's easy though to get freaked and split when finding out something like that, then feeling like you'd better keep hiding because you ran away as a ...
