Re: For Those Who DON'T believe in God:
Oh, it was good, I just hadn't much to add. I do think there's a lot to be said about living by the Bible in terms of the underlying principles it illustrates, not simply what we feel God should do for us. I've definitely made that mistake. You can't just expect God to swoop down and divinely interv...

Re: For Those Who DON'T believe in God:
Well, the usual answer is that there's a wish to change their political beliefs, uprooting what they see as illogical beliefs, if not simply trying to have a laugh at what they see as backwards thinking. And many of them are self-admittedly angry at God, thinking Him to be immoral, standing by, watc...

Personhood as it relates to Abortion?
So I've heard from several places that the underlying issue with abortion is a dispute over what consititutes "a person" -- being human versus being conscious, if I'm not mistaken. Not 100% on that, so correct me if you think otherwise, but assuming that's true I'm interested in reading wh...

Re: How can God know everything and let us have free will?
Well personally, similar to what K said, I think this apparent contradiction is based in a lot of assumptions both about God's nature as well as what free will really is in terms of its Biblical relevance. (Consulting a dictionary as some atheists are wont to do just makes their question theological...

Re: How can I convince someone that lust is wrong?
Unfortunately, I think there's a lot of people you simply won't be able to convince of this. I would suggest checking whether they think something can even be degrading in the first place, much less whether things can really be sacred. Shame/honor seem like the closest things you could reach for, as...

Re: The Intolerance of Christians Should Stop!
I can see how this could have a rationale -- after a heated argument, it's easy to interpret certain actions as being deliberately disruptive -- but the end result is nevertheless unjustifiable. If one's views are truly reprehensible (rather than simply challenging to the professor's false narrative...

Re: other religion's prophecies
Ok some are found here https://hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/2118/fulfilled-prophecies-in-hinduism Apparently dharma (evil, wrongness, vice) is rising in the world and this was prophecized millennia ago. According to Swami Vishwananda Europe was prophecised to be in ruins 50 years after some...

Re: Should we tell kids that Santa is real?
I think not, but I would encourage metaphorical thinking. Jordan B Peterson makes a pretty good argument that the fairy tales kids watch actually tap into deep questions about how to live. For instance, dragons don't literally exist, but stories of slaying dragons actually often say a lot about how ...

Re: Is being an atheist irrational?
Justhuman, I wonder if perhaps you're not putting the cart before the horse with your lying example. While it's very easy to posit some ultimate being that *does* lie and does "whatever He wants**," such seems to raise more questions than it answers. I think a lot of atheists assume that G...

Re: "If you were born elsewhere, you wouldn't be a Christian..."
Just be careful Patrick not to confuse Christian inclusivism with universalism . Christian inclusivist still believe that only Christ saves Universalists don't believe you need Christ to be saved at all . Big difference between the 2 From the little I've seen of universalists, they seem to disagree...

Re: "If you were born elsewhere, you wouldn't be a Christian..."
Yeah, I agree. I see the argument as largely a kind of red herring. Basically, "so what?" I think it's pretty obvious that people are influenced to believe in what the people surrounding them believe. And equally obvious that people by and large are going to stick with their original belie...

"If you were born elsewhere, you wouldn't be a Christian..."
This is a line of thought I've often seen leveled against Christianity, and really every religion, but those others aren't key here. I have my own answers to this, but I'm really curious how others here view it -- for one thing, my conviction in God's existence doesn't extend to the personal God of ...

Re: Can a computer program do this?
I think it'd depend highly on what information it uses in such an attempt to predict. It would need to either be given examples (machine learning) or be programmed explicitly with theories about how wars work and such.

Re: Jesus First SJW? Influence of Christ
I think it's an interesting question, all the more because it's often argued that Christianity held back humanity in a way that Greek culture would have not. I'd have to read up on ancient Greek history to make an informed opinion on the matter, but I think it's undeniable that Jesus promoted social...

Significance of Animal Sacrifice as the Old Covenant
I think perhaps one of the big things that's taken me a while to really start to understand is what it meant for Jesus to be crucified for our sins. To modern sensibilities, such might appear outdated because it harkens back to the archaic practice of animal sacrifice, but that simply misunderstands...
