Re: What hominid groups do you consider to be human in addition to Homo Sapiens?
That sounds about right, although to be clear the most important of those traits to me is moral responsibility, because of Genesis 3:22. The other two are more general litmus tests because moral sense is much harder to gauge.

All our nearest ancestors are dead, so I don't know. In theory I'd consider any that resembled homo sapiens in their ability to communicate, possess self-awareness, and be morally responsible.

Re: Most Influential Person in History
Yeah I know, I was reacting mostly to the "surprised and not surprised" part. Anyhow, it's a very interesting list, and the ones I checked for were listed (or not listed) appropriately. A lot of people, for instance, are quick to bash Sigmund Freud, and he certainly had some rather questio...

Re: Most Influential Person in History
I'm not sure what the time's affiliation is, but looking at wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus) it seems the general consensus among educated atheists is that Jesus really did exist, He just wasn't who He said He was. The list also notably doesn't distinguish between wheth...

Re: The Delusion of "Free Will"
Suppose I'm writing a computergame, a world full with characters that can freely think and act for themselves. Most likely it will run out of control somewhere/sometime, so I then make some adjustments. Most probably I would have to make several times an adjustment to get the result I want. A free ...

Wow. Some people really need to hand over the keys and let someone else interpret the Bible. Benny Hinn sounds like he's straight up drunk.

Re: First impressions
I mean, I think first impressions can be accurate, although like K I tend to look at a person's face -- I'd just woke up when I saw these, and it took me a minute to make sense of the picture because I was thrown off by how similar the faces were in spite of there being two outfits so different I as...

Re: Relationship of Sin and Death
Well, I suppose the main issue is that if we assume evolution is true, IOW it's the process by which God made life, it seems that there would indeed be two deaths -- one physical, one non-physical -- because death would've had to exist before Adam to fit our current understanding of the world. And s...

Re: The “Natural Theology” of Death - Part 3
To be clear, the question I’ll look to deal with in my next post in this: 1) Did God install death as part of the natural world in the beginning in response to sin, and death then came upon humanity as punishment -- physical death representing the spiritual truth of what "death" actually ...

Re: False Facts and True Fictions: Two Metrics of Truthfulness (re: the Harris-Peterson talk)
Heh, I guess that's about as clear as mud, huh? In other words, one can learn more about meaning and the human condition by studying the truth of people's experiences over the objective world. And further, if one looks at what is common across people's experiences, that would be intersubjective. But...

Re: False Facts and True Fictions: Two Metrics of Truthfulness (re: the Harris-Peterson talk)
I mean, fair enough, though my focus was on distinguishing between statements framed in terms of intersubjective experience and statements framed in terms of (our attempts to describe) objective phenomena. You can lump all such into one category, but I think they often present competing frameworks. ...

False Facts and True Fictions: Two Metrics of Truthfulness (re: the Harris-Peterson talk)
So, Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson had a recent dispute about whether scientific fact should be subordinated to human truth (in its terminology, i.e. certain facts can or should be thought of as untrue), and it reminded of a distinction floating around between mythos and logos. So basically, regardi...

Re: Chrislam
Huh. Thatkid, I wonder if you'd be a fan of the likes of Jordan Peterson. Joel Osteen seems to be a fan of general (but not specific) spiritual truths, considering he seems to reject the idea that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation (a key specific truth). Personally, the problem I have with &...

Idk, but when I considered getting more involved a while back I found I just kept running out of substantial things to say/ask. Sometimes things click on one level but not on others.

Re: Rise in atheism and secularism
Well, I think secular sentiments are still rising, though I'd have guessed that it's more that people are having increasingly secular takes on their religion.
