Re: Italian court convicts scientists !

Did they trust the scientists? Did the scientists mislead them? Article by nature: http://www.nature.com/news/shock-and-law-1.11643 "As members of an official risk commission, they had all participated in a meeting held in L’Aquila on 31 March 2009, during which they were asked to assess the ri...

For what it's worth, I typed in 20 for angle and 5 for force and created a stable orbit on my first try. y:-/

Re: Morality Without God?

These assertions of logic and facts are sounding more and more hollow. How did you arrive at these 'facts' and what are facts anyway. Why is your knowledge more legitimate than theirs? There's a lack of philosophical comprehension here.. You want to assert that everything you claim isn't resting on...

Re: Who are we to judge homosexuality/others?

A lot of the Bible is unclear and ambiguous (sorry, I couldn't find the right word that I wanted to use so that will just have to do for now) so it is up to the reader to "translate" the language again into something that makes sense. Also there are parts of the Bible that are no longer r...

Re: Morality Without God?

You forgot to add Beanybag to your list, he say he's an atheist. :D So, I gather it's okay for you to preach at others, but you don't like to be challenged. - y@};- My purpose, when I can, is not to challenge the beliefs of the Christians on this forum, but to understand them. I think this conversa...

I'm an atheist. I just think you should use the right argument.

Re: Morality Without God?

If we cannot judge what the Bible says about Yahweh then we cannot judge Yahweh to be moral (good) or immoral (bad) and all moral qualities the Bible attributes to Yahweh are emptied of meaning. Again, this is based on a misunderstanding of the moral philosophy of God. I think I understand your arg...

Re: Morality Without God?

Spock and Butterfly (those who are trying to attack the morality of God). These attacks hold on two conditions: 1) Morality is outside of God (and thus, he's not real) or 2) God is not the God of the Bible. In either case, God has not committed an atrocity. To get people to believe this is to get th...

Re: Morality Without God?

Kant's theory has crazy implications. For example, Kant believed that the categorical imperative implied ridiculous things like it would ALWAYS be wrong to lie under any circumstance, even when lying to a murderer about the location of the person he desires to kill. Obviously, he was not a clear th...

Re: Morality Without God?

Where does the GR exist, objectively? The GR is objective, because its value exists independent of an individual. What is it's source? The source of the GR is our moral intuitions, which arise from the self aware nature of humans. This seems contradictory. By what can you assert that it exists outs...

Re: Morality Without God?

OM can exist sans God. I found this interesting because, as I had said much earlier, morality CAN exist apart from God ( even the bible states this to a certain extent), BUT the notion of an Objective morality? Hmmm...I would think that, apart from a source totally removed from all involved, morali...

Re: Morality Without God?

Well, there has certainly been a lot of activity in this thread. Apologies if I am repeating what others have said, it is quite a lot for me to read. There philosophy assumes a form of dualism for the hard problem in that mental concepts are separate from physical reality. There are many ways to God...

Re: Morality Without God?

Hi there Spock. I like the way you post. Although it's not my place, I'll give you a brief rundown of the philosophy that I find most of them adhere to. There is a poster on here who is a professional philosopher as well, Jac, but I haven't seen him around here lately. Anyway, here is what he told m...
