Re: Merely Believe in Christ? Why Don't Atheists Believe?

I have to say, I sort of wonder where the misunderstanding surrounding belief began, who is served by the obfuscation of what it means to believe. It would be quite helpful if we, as a society, could stop making Christian belief out to be a mere intellectual prediction about the afterlife. Anyways, ...

Re: Sounds like Al was not a big fan of God.

Really, LittleHamster, why does this matter? Einstein made brilliant discoveries, but he wasn't right about everything, even in his chosen field. In the debates he had with Niels Bohr regarding quantum physics, not only did many of his ideas lose out to Bohr's, many of his thought experiments meant ...

Re: Relationship of Sin and Death

I was fairly busy at the time of this update, what with moving back to my hometown and all, so I've just now gotten to really read this. Basically, what I like most about atemporal interpretation of the consequence of sin is that it also fits with the consequence of the knowledge of good and evil. O...

Re: How Do You Feel About Death?

Yeah, I forgot about that. That's a very big part of it, and the key sentiment that's made me waffle about Christianity even after being convinced that it's the most reasonable position. Why atheism gets away with being presented as the default might be an interesting topic of discussion, but it's ...

Re: How Do You Feel About Death?

Patrick: I do believe. I was talking about my view when I was an atheist, and what I consider most likely if God didn't exist. Any thing that ultimately changed your mind about Jesus? Well, the seed for that was when I realized the popular atheistic view (masquerading as scientific) framed everythi...

Re: How Do You Feel About Death?

Patrick's side panel info identifies him as being a Christian. So, Patrick, why do you consider yourself a Christian if you don't believe what Jesus and His apostles said about death, and what is to come for those with faith, and without it? I do believe. I was talking about my view when I was an a...

Re: How Do You Feel About Death?

It seems to me when you were Atheist that you embraced some sort of afterlife, devoid of God of course, but nonetheless some sort of mystical consciousness that lives on though in a disjointed state. I wonder what reasoning got you think that such is likely the case, at least likely enough to stop ...

Re: How Do You Feel About Death?

Death is a concept I've had a lot of trouble with conceptually. My view is that either you exist at a point of time or not. If you don't, you can't enter into that period of time, so essentially you just jump to the next point in time, perhaps even repeating life if no more points are available (sim...

Re: There is no Hope without Jesus

Yes, this is exactly it. If eternal death is the endgame for all life, then the unborn basically miss nothing compared to the born, besides a small blip of existence. No meaning, no justice, no mercy, no hope, complete insignificance. I wouldn't go so far as to say it'd be completely insignificant,...

Re: Is Christianity out of date?

I think there's a lot of re-interpretation that's needed, as the book was written principally for people in another time and culture, but I don't think the principles are primitive or out of date.

Re: Nature of Reality: A Challenge to Atheists

I am not sure which atheists you are discussing but my general opinion is that everybody should be allowed to describe his or her ideological position so I don't understand your use of the word "self-proclaimed". Also, I think it is reasonable to criticise elements in an opponents view ev...

Re: Nature of Reality: A Challenge to Atheists

Patrick: With regard to the personal God of Christianity, I am intellectually agnostic, and don't have a lot to say debate-wise despite my identifying with the culture and general sentiments. I'm not sure what you are saying, but "identifying with the culture" or "general sentiments&...

Re: Nature of Reality: A Challenge to Atheists

This is still my favorite thread btw. Anyway, I'm sure K can speak for himself, when he has the time to answer, but I wanted to mention something about the following. However, the question remains what created the multiverse, a question that Christians often put forward. The materialist answer is th...

Re: What if an athiest scientist proves God exists?

I mean sure, but you're talking about "prove God exists," which is like -- well, it goes completely against the whole thing about faith for one thing.
